Georgia Anne Muldrow has detailed the third instalment in her VWETO release series. The 17-track VWETO III arrives May 21 through FORESEEN Entertainment/Epistrophik Peach Sound.
Following 2011's VWETO and 2019's VWETO II, VWETO III was entirely composed, performed, recorded, arranged, produced, mixed and mastered by Muldrow herself, and follows last year's Mama, You Can Bet! the polymath released as Jyoti.
With additional vocals from singer Shana Jensen and rapper Ayun Basa, VWETO III is said to range "from low-slung gnarly funk, head-nodding boom bap, psychedelic cosmic slop, wigged out leftfield, retro synth jams, jazzy afrofuturism, uplifting soul and L.A. heat."
"VWETO III is intended for movement," Muldrow offered of the collection. "It's to be played when you birth yourself back outside after a long introspective period to get the things you need. It intends for you to be your own superhero and wants to be your theme for power."
VWETO III also marks Muldrow's entry into the world of NFT art. The above cover art, illustrated by Breeze Yoko, is up for auction through OpenSea and Rarible, with 50 percent of proceeds set to go to Critical Resistance.
"Mufaro's Garden" is the first song to arrive from the album, and you can hear it here or down below.
As Muldrow explains in a statement, the song's inspiration came from the pages of a folktale book titled Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, which was illustrated by John Steptoe.
"There's a frame in that book that's so amazing, of Mufaro looking over his garden which joins with the rest of the land, and in the far distance, you can see the historic sight of Great Zimbabwe," Muldrow recalled. "I remember as a child spending hours just looking at this picture, wishing I could go there."
