Fucked Up's tour van was turned away at the US border this weekend as the band attempted to make their way to Chicago's Riot Fest, where they were scheduled to play together for the first time since 2019.

In an Instagram post uploaded on Saturday (September 18), Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham — who travelled to Chicago independently of the rest of the band — explained the situation, saying that the band was denied entry due to COVID-19 protocols related to drummer Jonah Falco's recent arrival from the UK.

He continued in the comments, saying:

I'm not going to lie: I'm bummed. Like many people, the past year and a half has been a rough one for my mental health. It has been a painful lesson in how important getting up on stage and losing it for an hour and a half is to me. As much as I have always pretended that I was ready to walk away and not miss it at any minute, having to actually let it go has been extremely difficult.

The last month, with the arrival of my birthday on Friday (which has never been my favourite time of the year) and the anniversaries of the passings of several friends, has been especially hard. Playing Riot Fest felt like a bit of a light at the end of the existential tunnel.

Abraham remained in Chicago while the rest of Fucked Up were forced to head home to Toronto.
