Italian technical/symphonic death metallers Fleshgod Apocalypse return with their third album, Labyrinth, which sees the band easing into their sound and finding their place in the world of extreme metal. Having gone overboard on 2011's Agony, Fleshgod Apocalypse have honed and further defined their approach. Labyrinth is less chaotic, musically, and much more focused, structurally, but still makes a huge impact with its immense, cataclysmic sound. Right from the start of "Kingborn," each track is heavy and crushing, featuring unpredictable songwriting and orchestral embellishments that work extremely well with the brutal, speedy riffs. Having a sound this complex, top-notch production is a must and Fleshgod Apocalypse pull it off by enlisting Stefano Morabito, who provides a clean listen. Making Labyrinth even more ambitious is the lyrical concept, which is based upon the myth of the Labyrinth of Knossos, and complements their grandiose, powerful music.
