American Football are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their much-loved debut album American Football with a covers album featuring interpretations from Iron & Wine, Ethel Cain, Manchester Orchestra, Blondshell and more. It's arriving October 18 on Polyvinyl.
Today, you can hear Iron & Wine's take on "Never Meant," plus a newly remastered version of the original song, which is part of an accompanying full-album remaster called American Football (25th Anniversary Edition). The former comes attached to a music video featuring Samuel Beam transposed across the walls of the iconic American Football House in Urbana, IL.
Beam recorded his cover with producer Brad Cook. In a statement, he said:
My neighbor Brad Cook and I have been circling each other hoping to work on something for a bit. When I was asked about this project, it felt like the perfect opportunity. Especially a song that I knew meant a lot to American Football's fans. Honoured to be part of this and hoping we did it justice.
The remastered album comes in spot-embossed and silver foil gatefold packaging with a 24-page booklet. It was remastered by original mastering engineer Jonathan Pines in Urbana's Private Studios, where it was recorded.
