Doja Cat Reveals Plans to "Explore Hardcore Punk"

"Not pop-punk. I feel like we have enough pop-punk artists right now."

Doja Cat has never been shy about her eclectic influences, but now she's committing to broadening her catalogue's sound, telling fans to prepare for an edgier, "hardcore punk"-informed project.

Speaking with Variety, the singer and rapper opened up about IDLES being her favourite band of last year — and apparently had their music on loop for hours during her photoshoot for the piece. It seems they're also inspiring the music she hopes to make soon.

"This is the manic part. I wasn't gonna tell you," she said. "But I'll just tell you now, because not talking about it is making me annoyed: I want to explore punk. But not pop-punk. I feel like we have enough pop-punk artists right now. And if there needs to be more, then let there be more, but I don't think I'm the one to do it."

She continued: "I want to explore more of a raw, unfiltered, hardcore punk sort of thing. It's just something that I'm doing for my own personal fun — getting some drummers and guitarists together. And I don't even know if that's gonna make it out there."

This wouldn't be Doja's first flirtation with punk — she sampled Blink-182's "What's My Age Again" on Hot Pink track "Bottom Bitch."

Doja's hardcore album plans contradict her previous comments about retiring from music.
