Oshawans Dizzy are a pop band and family — brothers Alex, Mackenzie and Charlie Spencer plus singer Katie Munsha — who've been active since 2015. They recently won the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year for their debut, Baby Teeth. Here are some of their favourite Oshawa spots. Location photos by Matt Forsythe.
NEB's Fun World (1300 Wilson Rd. N.)
Every Oshawa kid has had their birthday at NEB's (short for North End Bowl), and consequently their fifth grade popularity rating skyrocketed on the following Monday at school. They offer bowling, go karts, fair rides, rock climbing, arcade games and cheesy pizza.
Kops Records (156 Simcoe St. S.)
Until May 1, 2019, Kops occupied the former Star Records store; now, they've moved four doors down the street to a location five times the size. It's still the best place in Oshawa to sift through and discover some new gems in the bargain bin.
Isabella's Chocolate Café (2 King St. E.)
Isabella's is home to so many of our members' early music memories. Alex and Charlie used to perform open mics there. Katie used to go there after class. It's the best spot in Oshawa for handcrafted chocolates, great coffee and to say hi to the owner Rosie.
Wool on William (5 William St. W.)
Full disclosure: Mama Spencer owns this wonderful little shop that specializes in knitting, crochet and all the necessary accoutrement to make some beautiful socks and jumpers. She is also the best teacher, and has a knitting circle Wednesday nights where you can knit and gab.
Lakeview Park
Pretty self explanatory, but one of our favourite spots to hang on a nice day. Everything you need from a beach park: a pier, lots of greasy chip trucks, a nice long walking path, and a great view of Lake Ontario. They also offer tours of the historical buildings near the water, which are rich in Oshawa history.
Robert McLaughlin Gallery (72 Queen St.)
Oshawa's art gallery hosts monthly music nights where it's free to wander the gallery while also enjoying live local music and wine.
The LivingRoom Community Art Studio (149 Simcoe St. S.)
Owned by Mary Krohnert, the place is all about crafts. Anyone is welcome to come in and just do art. They also provide a range of workshops for low to no cost. It's accessible to budding artists from all economic backgrounds and they've hosted open mics as well.
