What branch of Americana gets you excited? Southern blues? Hard roots rock? Folk? Surf? It doesn't really matter, because Dex Romweber has got you covered. The third record from the Dex Romweber Duo (composed of him and his sister, Sarah), Images 13, is straight-no-chaser Americana.
Romweber's grizzled baritone is at home in a variety of settings. Whether it's the rough and tumble stomp of "Long Battle Coming" or the Tex-Mex ramble of a track like "Baby I Know What It's Like To Be Alone," his voice is heavy with experience. "I Don't Want To Listen" is a truly arresting heartbreak song that couldn't be sung by anyone else. But it's not just that rich voice that carries this album along; the instrumental tracks on the album, including the surf-rock gem "Blackout!," shine as much as anything on here.
Images 13 is as comforting as a record you've heard a million times before, but delivered with a charisma unique enough to make it feel exciting again.
