With winter approaching, Toronto alt-popsters the Darcys are doing what every Canadian dreams of — moving someplace sunnier. The duo are making their departure for the brighter pastures of Los Angeles official with the release of new single "Running for the Hills."
The fresh tune continues the Darcys' trip into the world of radio-friendly pop-rock with spidery guitar licks, crisp percussion and fluttering synth accents surrounding Jason Couse's anthemic vocals as he sings of the band's ambitions: "I've been chasing the bright lights / not sure of what I might find."
In a statement, drummer Wes Marskell wrote about the band's relocation:
I grew up in Toronto, its coffee shops, shawarma restaurants, and construction sites are in my blood. Toronto will always be my home, but I've had this ongoing love affair with Los Angeles (something I probably didn't suppress all that well on our last few records). With everything happening in the world this year, I packed my stuff and moved to LA. There was no sign, no grand gesture, it just felt like now or never. When you live in a place for a long time there are no surprises, first impressions die hard, and everyone has already made their mind up about you. In the end, I think it's good to put some distance between you and where you're from to see if where you're headed is where you want to be going. I'm well aware that the bright lights of LA can often be a mirage, but I needed to live it for myself. This city has spit out people a lot better than I over the years, and I could easily be just another one of them, but that's a fate I'd rather tempt than live forever not knowing. At its core, that's what "Running For The Hills" is about. It's about change and it's about looking forward, not back.
The accompanying lyric video finds the duo enjoying the unmistakable views of their new surroundings, with the mountainous backdrop backlit by the setting sun. Plus, there's a series of truly heartstopping moments when it looks like Couse is about to fall off a cliff.
"Running for the Hills" is the first taste of the Darcys' upcoming EP, set for release in 2022. It will mark the follow-up to 2020 LP Fear & Loneliness. Watch the "Running for the Hills" video below.
