Sleep Is the Enemy

Published Jun 1, 2006

We all know what to expect from Danko Jones. He/they have created their own style with the thick 4/4 groove and heavy low-end rhythms. To call them up on the carpet for it would be like giving ZZ Top shit for having beards yet again, so the real question is: how well do they pull it off? In keeping with their tradition of simplistic, generally up-tempo foot-tappers, Sleep Is the Enemy is solid and perfectly-recorded. Almost to the point of being sterile, which is dangerous as the band can clearly play far more intricately than they do on this offering. Still the trio milk each tune for all its worth with reasonably mindless lyrics revolving around the typical love and rockin’ out. Each chorus is undeniably hooky delivering an end result where Sleep Is the Enemy isn’t something that’s going to appeal to the discerning music enthusiast, but such rock-by-numbers is perfect for those suburbanites looking for something a touch dirtier and adrenaline-pumping than their typical Friday night Nickelback as they prepare for club night.
