Now that OVO has claimed its stake in University of Toronto-themed streetwear, it's only natural that the fashion line's founder and Toronto native Drake is likewise celebrated in academia.
The university soon-to-be formerly known as Ryerson has just announced its plan to offer a brand new media studies course on the 6ix gods, Drake and the Weeknd, at its Toronto campus [via blogTO].
Helmed by Ryerson's Creative School, "Deconstructing Drake and The Weeknd" will be instructed by publicist, Canada's foremost expert on hip-hop culture and author of Far From Over: The Music and Life of Drake, The Unofficial Story, RU professor-in-residence Dalton Higgins.
Higgins shared the news himself via Instagram, where he wrote:
Why Drake & The Weeknd one might ask? Well, there are great courses out there being taught about numerous rock, folk and pop stars like Miley Cyrus, Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, so why not The Weeknd and Dizzy
It's time to get our Canadian rap & R&B icons recognized & canonized academically or otherwise. And it is CRITICAL for scholars, historians, to examine the Toronto music scene that birthed Drake/Weeknd and helped create the conditions for them to become mega successful.
The course will reportedly kick off during the school's Winter 2022 session.
