We at the hotel, motel… Pitbull Stadium? In exciting news for residents of Miami, hometown hero Pitbull has purchased the naming rights for Florida International University's football stadium, which will now be known as Pitbull Stadium.
As reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel, Pitbull will dish out $1.2 million USD per year for the next five years to pay for the stadium's new name. Previously, the stadium — home of the FIU Panthers — was known as Riccardo Silva Stadium, named for the businessman and investor who owned the Italian soccer club AC Milan and minor league US soccer club Miami FC.
Chris Vannini of The Athletic also reports that Pitbull will create an FIU anthem as part of his contract as the "Official entrepreneur of FIU athletics." The position will also require that he appear at one FIU fundraiser per year, plus he's gotta make 12 social media posts annually promoting FIU. There's also a provision for a "Pitbull-affiliated performer" at future FIU games.
FIU will open the newly named Pitbull Stadium against Central Michigan on September 7.
