While much of Heavy Montreal was an exercise in intensity and extremity of a more straightforward or brutal variety, Cynic introduced an entirely different emotional register with their performance. Plaintive and complex, their set rippled and shivered in the humidity, vibrating in the bodies of the audience members like something sacred.
"Integral" seemed to warp and twist, expanding and contracting like a living thing, the music all muscle and emotiveness while Paul Masvidal's manner remained meditatively serene. The security guards aimed their hoses straight up for much of the set, so that, despite the brilliant sunlight, while Cynic played, it rained.
