Coachella Has Been Officially Cancelled for 2020

The festival apparently will return in 2021 with limited capacity

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic making it physically impossible, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was not able to take place on April 10 to 12 and April 17 to 19 as originally planned. Instead, the California fest had been postponed until October. Now, however, a new report suggests it's been cancelled altogether.

According to Billboard, the festival will not happen at all in 2020. Instead, it will either return in April 2021 at 60 percent of its capacity or in a full-fledged edition in October 2021.

UPDATE (6/11, 12 a.m. ET): Coachella has now officially been cancelled, alongside country music spinoff festival Stagecoach, by Riverside County health officials. This marks the first time Coachella has been cancelled in 20 years.

"I am concerned as indications grow that COVID-19 could worsen in the fall," Riverside County public health officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser said. "In addition, events like Coachella and Stagecoach would fall under Governor Newsom's Stage 4, which he has previously stated would require treatments or a vaccine to enter. Given the projected circumstances and potential, I would not be comfortable moving forward. These decisions are not taken lightly with the knowledge that many people will be impacted. My first priority is the health of the community."

When it does return, it's unclear whether or not Coachella will have the same lineup that was planned in 2020. This year's festival was due to be headlined by Rage Against the MachineTravis Scott and Frank Ocean.

Stay tuned for more official word from festival organizers.
