Longtime Cloud Nothings fans are bound to raise their eyebrows at the opening seconds of "Final Summer," as the song begin with the whooshing swell of a synthesizer. And while that buzzy bed of electronics remains throughout the song, alongside a horn break, the core of the song is pure Cloud Nothings: a hypnotic guitar figure is painted over with honeyed pop-punk chord changes, rapid-fire drum fills, and Dylan Baldi's poignant pop talk for himself. "Oh, I have some thoughts / Oh, I have some dreams," he sings, softening the snarl heard on his heavier works. "But I need to be happy / With what I've got for me."
When this single finished playing on Spotify, it autoplayed "Rock" from Cloud Nothings' self-titled 2011 debut, highlighting the similarity between those songs and reminding that this more ornate version isn't too much of a departure from the great punk band they've always been (even if "Rock" is about twice as fast).
This is Cloud Nothings' first single since signing to Pure Noise Records, and it's an exciting glimpse at how the band can continue to evolve while maintaining their essence.
