If you're headed to Austin, TX, for SXSW 2023 this month, you'll want to make Canada House your home away from home during the festival's 37th annual edition.
Located at Swan Dive (615 Red River St., Austin, TX) from March 11 to 16, Canada House is among the venues showcasing the country's creativity and innovation through more than 130 music performances, 40 film screenings, extended reality (XR) showcases and activations.
As previously reported, a host of Canadian music favourites and emerging talents — including Julie Doiron, William Prince, poolblood, Boy Golden, Savannah Ré, Chiiild, Mariel Buckley, Mauvey, JayWood, Skye Wallace, Rich Aucoin, the Garrys and more — will grace both indoor and patio stages at Canada House during the fest.
Turning to the big screen, 14 Canadian films and coproductions will be shown at SXSW, with seven of them standing as world premieres. These include director and writer Ally Pankiw's I Used to Be Funny, centred on a comedian with PTSD, Molly McGlynn's Bloody Hell, following a teenager with MRKH syndrome, and Kim Albright's With Love and a Major Organ, about a woman who tears her heart out for the man she loves — literally.
A Canadian contribution to the festival's XR programming comes courtesy of Whipped Cream. The Vancouver DJ, producer and Exclaim! New Faves alum will showcase the VR music video for her Jasiah and Crimson Child-assisted single "The Dark," for which the collaborators were shot with over 100 cameras to convert their real-world selves into holograms. Billed as "the world's highest-resolution volumetric VR music experience to date," "The Dark" allows listeners to be within the video's story, as opposed to simply viewing it.
Further Canada House happenings include an exploration of the Metaverse with Frontier Collective's SXSW Vancouver Takeover (March 12), a rendezvous with Quebec's cultural industries (March 13) and conversations with the Canadian creators behind the films in selection (March 14)
