Calgary live music institution Broken City is closing after over 15 years.
The 11th avenue social club, billed as the city's "foremost home for music and arts," will reopen as a vegan pub called Modern Love — helmed by the team behind Edmonton's the Buckingham — this spring. They announced that they'd be taking over the space on social media today, celebrating "No more leaky roofs!" and "Toilets that flush!"
While many were immediately upset to hear of the loss of another local venue, Modern Love is likely to maintain the alternative ethos of Broken City: they have assured that the renovated eatery will continue to host live music and have already announced that the first show after it opens will see Minneapolis punk band Off With Their Heads celebrate the 10th anniversary of their third album, Home, with support from SM Worldwide and Vargouille.
Broken City was otherwise known for its rooftop patio and putting on an eclectic array of events. In addition to live music (including all-ages matinee performances), their programming regularly featured comedy, pub trivia, DJ sets and karaoke.
