"Hand out the loot bags... this party's over." So reads a post on Ottawa's Buried Inside's MySpace blog. Unfortunately, they're referring to the apocalyptic bad-news party that is their music, as, after 13 years together, one of Canada's most unique metal/hardcore bands are breaking up. Or at least taking some time off with no plans to get the party started again, according to the band.
"We've sort of refrained from calling it a break-up," guitarist/vocalist Andrew Tweedy recently told Exclaim! in an interview. "We're playing a few more shows, which will be our last, and then taking a break with no intention of resuming as of right now. It's less dramatic, I suppose."
The story is a familiar one: Tweedy and his band-mates have found it harder and harder to find time to get together to write new material for the band. Combine that with the difficulty of finding a second guitarist for tours (the band have been a four-piece since 2009 and use fill-in guitarists when playing live) and other commitments taking priority, and it became clear that splitting up, even temporarily, seemed like the right thing to do.
"Life is catching up with us, I guess," says Tweedy. "It's hard to just take one step back at this point. You're kind of in or you're out."
Tweedy - who says the guys will move on to different, still-unspecified musical projects - explains that the decision to break up has been on the back of all the guys' minds for a while, but they just weren't ready to acknowledge it.
"We still aren't," he admits. "But we've been less and less available for shows and tours the last little while, and ultimately the timing seemed right. The idea of continuing on half-hearted is the opposite of what this band has always been about."
Buried Inside released four albums, with 2005's Chronoclast and 2009's Spoils of Failure both released through metal biggie Relapse Records. The band were one of a handful keeping a specific, unnamed subgenre of metal and hardcore alive: that epic, building, tense sound that bands like the dangerously close to being forgotten Union of Uranus, Portraits of Past and Acme helped create.
Buried Inside will play two shows this week and then one final show in Ottawa "after the summer," says Tweedy. Details aren't available for the final Ottawa show yet, but info on this week's shows is below.
Tour dates:
5/27 Toronto, ON - Sneaky Dee's ^
5/28 Montreal, QC - Katacombes &
^ with KEN Mode, Titan, and Engineer
& with Titan and Ensorcelor
