Broken Social Scene co-founder Kevin Drew is taking his talents to the big screen. The musician has composed the original score for the upcoming documentary The Movie Man

Drew said taking part in the film's creation was a no-brainer, as it allowed him to explore a long-time interest.

"Movies are my greatest passion," he said in a press release. "The magic of a film taking you away from the world we live in got to me at a very young age. I have always wanted to direct and tell stories, but found myself caught up in the music world and feel as if I missed the boat."

The film centres around the story of Highlands Cinemas in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario as its owner Keith Stata struggles to keep it afloat.

Toronto production company Door Knockers Media made the movie with director Matt Finlin at the helm who, along with executive producer Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies, is a long-time patron of the unique theatre. Finlin even accredits his decision to work in film to his experience there.

Drew believes that the movie's importance goes beyond the story of Stata and Highland Cinemas.

"We are all attracted to dreamers, and this is a story of a man who acted on his dream through the passion of film," said Drew. "It works as a wonderful metaphor into how we need community support for dreamers and how dreamers are the ones who rescue us from the war against art."

Although it has yet to get an official release date, Door Knockers is vying for the movie to premiere at TIFF in September.
