On That's the Spirit, Bring Me the Horizon move forward from metal to a more alt-rock sound, without looking back, so when vocalist Oli Sykes and keyboardist/vocalist Jordan Fish met up with Exclaim! TV Aggressive Tendencies before a sold-out show at Toronto's Sound Academy, that was one of the topics of conversation.
The evolution wasn't without growing pains; lyrically, the album is about the vitality of sadness that one should embrace rather than reject. Sykes likens each song on That's the Spirit to a life lesson, though he admits it had to get dark before it could get light. For Sykes, that dark, rock bottom was a drug addiction, which he touches on here before explaining that Fish came around at the perfect time to give him someone to focus on writing music with.
