There never really was but now there's definitely no precedent to Braids' style. They play familiar instruments like guitars and drums, and employ more electronic music pads and synthesized sounds these days, but they build things with these tools that have never been built before.

The fact that they're ahead of the curve was apparent during their headlining set, where their talent towered over the other strong bands on the bill. They're driven by the frenetic Austin Tufts, by now one of the most inventive, fascinating drummers in the world. Always on point, he enables Raphaelle Standell-Preston to — in addition to commanding the other musical instruments she's playing — sing most powerfully.

It was a dynamic and memorable display by a band who are not really of this time. Braids occupy a rare outer space, beholden to no traditions, machines with hard feelings.
