With his short stories masquerading as songs, John Darnielle founding member of the Mountain Goats has crafted a wide range of off-kilter characters. He continues this tradition with Roger, a 15-year-old patient in a psychiatric hospital and the protagonist of Darnielles first book, a loving diary-style exploration of Black Sabbaths Master Of Reality, part of Continuum Presss 33 1/3 series.
"Writing in the diary format was a lot easier and more convenient for me than trying to structure a big novel, because I had to write it on tour, Darnielle says. "Some of it was written in Sweden, in hotel rooms between shows. Inspired by his real-life experiences as a psychiatric nurse (and love of all things metal), Darnielles literary debut is a fast, addictive read that also tugs on the heartstrings of sensitive Ozzy fans.
