Black Mountain Celebrate Debut Album's 10th Anniversary with Expanded Reissue

BY Josiah HughesPublished Mar 31, 2015

It's been a while since we've heard from Vancouver classic rock riffers Black Mountain, and while the band are reportedly plugging away on a new album, they will be revisiting their debut full-length with a deluxe reissue.

As the story goes, the album was initially conceived as the fourth full-length from Stephen McBean and Josh Wells' Jerk with a Bomb project, but a new band was eventually formed.

"Matt [Camirand, bass] joined, and we changed the band name after a dream of how life could be different in the B section between Black Flag and Black Sabbath," McBean recalled in a statement of the band's growing lineup, which also included Amber Webber. "Josh's roommate Jeremy [Schmidt, keys] was lurking about. We asked him if he wanted to add some synth bleeps or whatever. He came back with all these orchestrated keyboard parts, and we said, 'Oh, you should probably join the band now.'"

Recorded at now shuttered BC recording hub the Hive, Black Mountain initially arrived in 2005 and cemented the group as a force to be reckoned with. For its 10 year anniversary, Jagjaguwar will offer an expanded, double-LP reissue featuring eight bonus tracks. These include the Druganaut 12-inch, plus four previously unreleased tracks. A limited edition will arrive on grey vinyl.

The new version of Black Mountain arrives on June 23. Its tracklisting is available below, along with a trailer for the release.

Black Mountain also have a world tour in the works, including Canadian stops at Vancouver's Levitation festival and the Ottawa Bluesfest.
