Björk

"Breezeblock Mix"

BY Cam LindsayPublished Jul 5, 2007

This isn’t exactly timely, but since when does a DJ mix by Björk need to reflect anything current? Lifted from the vaults of BBC’s Radio 1 Breezeblock series, this 1998 set from the pride of Iceland shows her heavy fascination with IDM at the time, sliding in the likes of Oval, Black Dog, Aphex Twin and future collaborators Matmos. But it wouldn’t like Björk to not make a statement, and she does by inserting unknown (at least over here) artists from her expansive, sundry tastes, such as Peruvian Meredith Monk’s sublime yet peculiar "Gotham Lullaby” or even more "different,” Tuhai Merz Sanam’s rendition of "I Will Always Love You.” She also has a little fun, throwing in Nico, Michael Jackson, and of course, Public Enemy to represent her rebellious side.
