If you haven't picked up copies of any of this year's shortlist nominees for the Polaris Music Prize, it might be a good time to hit your local record store. A new 10-inch release finds former nominees like Joel Plaskett and Zaki Ibrahim covering other Polaris-honoured artists, and it's being given away at select shops with the purchase of a record from a current shortlister.
A press release finds the Polaris team explaining that they've just released their second annual Polaris Cover Sessions record, a three-song 10-inch highlighting "an ongoing curated program where past Polaris nominees cover songs from other past Polaris nominees."
This year, it showcases Arkells doing Owen Pallett's In Conflict cut "I Am Not Afraid," Joel Plaskett covering Feist's Metals number "Bittersweet Melodies," and Zaki Ibrahim remaking Leonard Cohen's Old Ideas track "Show Me the Place." You can hear all the covers at the bottom of the page.
The 10-inch, which comes on translucent blue wax, is being given away at select record shops across Canada with the purchase of one of the 10 records that appear on this year's Polaris shortlist. You'll find the full list of nominees over here, while the participating record stores can be found below.
Last year's inaugural Polaris Cover Sessions record had Whitehorse tackling the New Pornographers' "Bones of an Idol," Sarah Harmer covering Caribou's "Odessa," and Great Lake Swimmers reinterpreting Harmer's "I'm a Mountain."
As previously reported, this year's Polaris Music Prize will be awarded at a gala in Toronto on September 19.
