Anika Teams Up with Portishead's Geoff Barrow for Debut Album

BY Josiah HughesPublished Nov 18, 2010

When Bristol-via-Berlin performer Anika met Portishead's Geoff Barrow through a mutual friend, it changed her life almost instantly. Bonding over a love of punk, dub and vintage girl groups, Anika entered Barrow's UK studio just one week later and recorded her self-titled debut with Barrow's band Beak>.

Recorded in just 12 days, Anika is described as as "uneasy easy listening... The result of this collaboration is a political/trashy/discordent/reggae/German/old school Bristol/punk-funk sound -- all sown together with a collection of classic songs and a sound of other worldliness," according to the press release, adding that it sounds like "dub without overdubs."

Anika's self-titled release has already been released in Europe via Barrow's Invada Records, but Stones Throw will issue the record on vinyl in North America and Japan on December 7 with an advance digital release sometime this month. For now, a full stream of album track "Yang Yang" is available below, while clips of each song can be heard here.

Anika:

 1. "Terry"
2. "Yang Yang"
3. "End of the World"
4. "Masters of War"
5. "Officer Officer"
6. "Sadness Hides The Sun"
7. "No One's There"
8. "I Go To Sleep"
9. "Masters of War (Dub)"
