In Exclaim!'s current cover story, singer-songwriter Allison Russell spoke about the joyful sound of her new album The Returner — and listeners can now get a taste of that in the new single "Stay Right Here."
Unlike the rootsy folk Russell has traditionally been known for, "Stay Right Here" is a soulful banger, its urgent low end holding down a funky groove for swooping strings and soulful hooks. The song is about "resisting the siren songs of self-hatred, apathy and oblivion," Russell said in a statement.
"It's about fighting the nihilistic forces of bigotry, fear and fascism. Right here, right now," she said. "The good fight, good trouble, it's a Freedom Song. It's about leaning into the fierce Survivor's Joy and the POWER of our worldwide rainbow coalition to reduce harm for all our children, for our planet, for all those yet to come. We are more than seeds — we're the soil and the water — the good ancestors. Every one of us, equal under the sun — we shall not be overcome. Our Circle is STRONG."
The accompanying video captures the energy by showing Russell and some friends dancing the night away. It was directed by Seck.
The Returner is out September 8 through Fantasy Records. Read Exclaim!'s cover story here.
