Damon Albarn and his Africa Express project are paying tribute to Terry Riley's In C with a cover of the 1964 minimalist piece. They've now released a video for Africa Express Presents... Terry Riley's In C Mali.
The clip is a 41-minute music video for the entire piece. It was filmed in Bamako, Mali, at the time of recording, and while some of the shots show musicians performing, most of it focuses on life and culture in the West African nation. Much of the footage repeats throughout the course of the film, giving it a hypnotic, repetitive quality that mirrors the droning, clattering music.
It was directed by Roland Hamilton. Watch it below.
Africa Express Presents... Terry Riley's In C Mali is already out digitally, and it arrives on CD and vinyl this week through Transgressive. Performers include Albarn, Brian Eno, Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner and more.
