A New Peter Gabriel Album Is "Closer Than You Think"

His last solo record of new material was 2002's 'Up'

Former Genesis lead singer Peter Gabriel still wants to be your sledgehammer — and it might fall in the form of a new solo album arriving soon.

It's been 19 long years since Gabriel's last full-length studio offering of original material Up — though there was that cringe-worthy Snowden theme, as well as the single "I'm Amazing" that he shared in 2016 ahead of his tour with Sting.

And now, as Sting gears up to release his new album The Bridge, there must be something in the air for classic rock icons: the Genesis News website is reporting as of yesterday (October 10) that Gabriel has been in the studio recently.

In a new interview with Italian magazine SPECCHIO, the musician apparently teased that a new album is "happening — it's closer than you think."

Gabriel confirmed that he's been recording for the last ten days or so with a full band, working on a hefty tracklist of at least 17 new songs.

While that's all the information we have so far, it certainly sounds promising. The last we've heard from Gabriel was when the rocker made an appearance on XL Recordings' co-founder Richard Russel's Everything Is Recorded in 2018.

We'll be keeping our ears peeled for new Peter Gabriel in 2022.

The current Genesis line-up is on the road for their "The Last Domino?" reunion tour, which Phil Collins says will be their last. Last year, renowned women's pleasure advocate Harry Styles covered Gabriel's smash hit "Sledgehammer."
