The film adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog truly defied the odds; back in 2019, Sonic's original character design was met with universal disapproval, so the film was delayed and eventually turned out to be surprisingly great. Now, Sonic's original look has returned for a cameo in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
The film, which comes out today through Disney+, takes a meta look at the decline of '80s cartoon characters Chip and Dale. Working a booth at a fan convention, Dale (Andy Samberg) encounters "Ugly Sonic," i.e. the original version of the character who is now out of work.
This "Ugly Sonic" talks about how the internet hated his "human teeth." It's almost enough to feel sorry for that creepy little guy. This version of the character is played by Tim Robinson (rather than Ben Schwartz, who voiced Sonic in the movie).
Speaking of movies that are surprisingly great, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is out now on Disney+. It's good!
