'The Simpsons' Mangled with Bad Aspect Ratio Crops on Disney+
Published Nov 13, 2019Yesterday (November 12) marked the launch of the long-awaited Disney+ streaming service. Its arrival was not without some technical issues, as viewers had a tough time logging in. As it turns out, things weren't so great for Simpsons fans once they finally logged in, either.
Until 2009, The Simpsons was released in a 4:3 format. Since it's animated and not shot on cameras, it would be nearly impossible to switch the show to a 16:9 format. But rather than let the series's golden age exist as it was intended, Disney has shared those classic episodes in a garish new cropped version.
A number of fans pointed out this botched release of the show, including the way it ruined some visual gags:
All the classic Simpsons episodes on Disney+ are in cropped widescreen format -- this means you miss out on tons of great visual jokes, like how Duff, Duff Lite and Duff Dry all come from the same tube. pic.twitter.com/cTy9adulFl— Tristan Cooper (@TristanACooper) November 12, 2019
Further, a Twitter account that mocks Disney+'s ridiculous set of titles also made a gag about the crop, which was responded with an even better joke:
Disney has not yet responded to criticism of the great Simpsons crop of 2019.
