Sean Penn Is Trying to Block a Netflix Film That Reportedly Suggests He Ratted Out El Chapo

Netflix documentary The Day I Met El Chapo: The Kate del Castillo Story is set to shed more light on the 2015 meeting between the notorious Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán and actors Kate del Castillo and Sean Penn. However, Penn is reportedly pushing for the documentary to be blocked or re-edited due to suggestions that he informed the United States Department of Justice of the Mexican drug kingpin's whereabouts.

As TMZ reports, multiple interview subjects in the documentary apparently suggest that Penn told the United States government that he was travelling to an unknown location in Mexico to interview El Chapo for Rolling Stone. Penn has stated that the meeting was set up by del Castillo.

TMZ obtained an email from The Day I Met El Chapo executive producer David Broome, who wrote, "My concern is that we are taking an immense amount of pressure from all directions related to Sean Penn and currently Netflix has done a great job of hanging tough — but their nerves are on edge... I'm worried that there's a chance Netflix hits the brakes for a while."

Hours after El Chapo met with del Castillo and Penn on October 2, 2015, Mexican authorities raided the site, though the kingpin had fled safely. El Chapo was arrested three months later in the early hours of January 8, 2016.

TMZ reports that several of Penn's lawyers have contacted Netflix in efforts to remove references of the actor's alleged contact with the United States government from the film, noting that Penn could be targeted, along with his family and associates, if the film airs in its current state.

Penn's spokesperson Mark Fabiani told TMZ, "It is reprehensible that, in their ongoing, relentless efforts to gain additional attention and publicity, Ms. del Castillo and her team (who have zero firsthand knowledge) have sought to create this profoundly false, foolish, and reckless narrative."

Fabiani continued: "The notion that Mr. Penn or anyone on his behalf alerted DOJ to the trip is a complete fabrication and bald-faced lie. It never happened, nor would there have been any reason for it to have happened."
