The 2022 Emmy Awards took place last night, and one of the most unfortunately memorable moments occurred when Quinta Brunson won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary. What should have been a triumphant moment resulted in Brunson getting quite literally upstaged by Jimmy Kimmel, who laid at her feet throughout her entire speech in what was apparently supposed to be a joke. Kimmel's bit has widely been met with scorn, but Brunson has since spoken out to clarify that she isn't mad.
"I know Jimmy Kimmel, and, I don't know, I felt like the bit didn't bother me that much," she told reporters backstage, going on to say that she knows Kimmel personally.
"I don't know what the Internet thinks, but, I don't know — I know him," she said. "Honestly, Jimmy gave me my first big late-night spot and was one of the first people to see Abbott. He Instagram messaged me that he saw this comedy and thought it was one of the greatest comedies of all time, and he was so excited that it was going to be on ABC. So I think, in that moment, I was just really happy that it was Jimmy up there. I kind of consider him one of the comedy godfathers."
She added, "Tomorrow maybe I'll be mad at him. I'm going to be on his show on Wednesday, so I might punch him in the face. I don't know — we'll see what happens." Watch her words below.
Kimmel's stunt was part of a joke with Will Arnett, who dragged the lifeless Kimmel onto the stage and made a joke about how Kimmel "got into the skinny margaritas" at the bar. So I guess he was supposed to be passed out drunk? Honestly, it was a decent bit that should have ended right when Brunson's name was announced.
Kimmel remained at Brunson's feet for her entire minute-long speech — thankfully out of the frame — and stayed there into the commercial break. Watch the awkward incident below.
Brunson is the creator, writer and star of Abbott Elementary, a mockumentary-style sitcom about a Philadelphia elementary school.
