NBC Paid Half a Billion Dollars to Get 'The Office' Off of Netflix
There are more options for streaming television shows and movies than ever before, and yet much of the world would rather rewatch The Office. The 2000s sitcom — itself a remake of the British show of the same name — has amassed a cult following, making it a hot property for streamers. As such, NBCUniversal has just swooped in and gott it taken off Netflix.

Netflix announced the show would be leaving its service in 2021, suggesting that The Office will appear on NBC's own streaming platform by then:

NBC originally aired the show, so it makes sense that the network would air it on its own platform. But NBC wasn't able to just demand it back. After all, it was originally produced by Universal Television, a different division of NBCUniversal.

As such, CNBC reports NBC had to commit to $100 million USD per year for five years to get the show. This beat out an offer of $90 million USD from Netflix.

All of that money on the table, and yet Steve Carell refuses to come back for an Office reboot.
