Filmmaker and producer Judd Apatow has revealed what his plan would have been for a Superbad sequel, despite the cast and crew's long-standing hesitancy to return to the material of the 2000s buddy-comedy classic.
Speaking with Michael Rosenbaum of Inside of You, Apatow shared that he wanted Jonah Hill's Seth and Michael Cera's Evan to continue their friendship in college in the second film:
I always wanted them to do a sequel to Superbad. I know that Jonah said "Oh it'll be funny to do it when we're 70 or 80," but I really wanted them to do a Superbad in college where Jonah flunks out of college and just shows up and visits Michael Cera at college. But everyone was like, "Nah we don't want to screw up Superbad by accidentally making a crappy second one" and I would always say the same thing, "Well that's like saying don't make the second episode of The Sopranos."
Comparison to arguably the best TV series of all time aside, Apatow's take is a mostly-accurate portrayal of the Superbad crew's lukewarm response to a potential sequel. Back in January, Hill joked that he would do an "old-folks-home Superbad" when he's 80 years old, while Cera is more interested in doing a different movie with the same cast. Meanwhile, Christopher Mintz-Plasse — who played McLovin — suggested last year that instead of the original cast doing a second film, they should make a gender-swapped version (if we're discounting 2019's Booksmart).
Seth Rogen, who co-wrote the original alongside Evan Goldberg, has been famously hesitant to revisit the material, stating in 2020 that he's "terrified of subtracting from it in any way with a bad sequel or spinoff."
Of course, Hill and Cera are getting a little too old to portray college kids anyway, so unless they plan on PEN15-ing it, we're more likely to get that senior citizen version, if any at all.
