Last week, Rolling Stone published an exposé that saw 16 current and former employees of The Tonight Show accuse host Jimmy Fallon of creating a toxic workplace with his "erratic" on-set behaviour. Now, Jerry Seinfeld has called the allegations — which included two staffers claiming to have witnessed Fallon berate a crew member during the taping of a segment that featured the comedian as a guest — an "idiotic twisting of events."
"This is so stupid," Seinfeld said in a statement, which both Rolling Stone and Variety published as a response to the report that named him in relation to what the employees called an "uncomfortable moment" on set. Fallon had reportedly chastised the crew member in charge of cue cards for that night's show, and Seinfeld allegedly asked the host to apologize to the staffer.
"I remember this moment quite well," Seinfeld wrote of the incident. "I teased Jimmy about a flub, and we all had a fun laugh about how rarely Jimmy is thrown off. It was not uncomfortable at all. Jimmy and I still occasionally recall it and laugh. Idiotic twisting of events."
For the sources in the report, Fallon's ups and downs (often allegedly based on a long-rumoured problem with alcohol) spoiled the dream of working for The Tonight Show, some even claiming to have experienced suicidal ideation during their time there.
After the piece was published, Fallon apparently got on a Zoom call with his employees to apologize. "I feel so bad I can't even tell you," he said, as per Variety. "I want this show to be fun, it should be inclusive for everybody, it should be funny, it should be the best show, the best people."
