Actor Jeremy Renner is in critical but stable condition following a snowplow accident near his home in Lake Tahoe, NV, on New Year's Day.

The 51-year-old Avengers star's publicist confirmed [via The Guardian] that the actor suffered blunt chest trauma and other injuries. He underwent surgery today; as of this writing, he is out of surgery and remains in intensive care.

His publicist said, "Jeremy's family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City mayor, Hillary Schieve, and the Carano and Murdock families. They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans."
