The rise and fall of BlackBerry — the Canada-founded smartphone brand that was one of the world's most recognizable at its peak — will be the subject of a new film starring Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton.
As Variety reports, Baruchel and Howerton lead the cast of BlackBerry. The film, which has wrapped production, was directed by Matt Johnson (Nirvanna the Band the Show, The Dirties, Operation Avalanche) from a screenplay adapted from 2015 book Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry, authored by journalists Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff.
The publication adds that the business relationship of company co-founders Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie is "at the heart of the story," though it has yet to be confirmed whether Baruchel and Howerton will play the execs onscreen.
Variety notes that BlackBerry cast also includes Cary Elwes, Saul Rubinek, Rich Sommer, Martin Donovan, Michael Ironside and director Johnson, who recently appeared in Kazik Radwanski's Anne at 13,000 ft.
While a release date has yet to be revealed, BlackBerry will be introducing the project to buyers at TIFF, with Canadian distribution to come via Elevation Pictures.
2022 has seen Baruchel host the Canadian adaptation of LOL: Last One Laughing, host docuseries We're All Gonna Die (Even Jay Baruchel), and appear in the new season of The Kids in the Hall.
