Jackass: The Lost Tapes

BY Robert BellPublished Oct 9, 2009

Perhaps calling this collection of Jackass stunts and shenanigans The Lost Tapes is a bit of a misnomer, as, more accurately, it's a collection of moments either too tepid or too gross for the series as it aired on MTV. This isn't to suggest that this assault of clips and moments isn't entertaining in the same basic visceral manner as prior DVD titles from Johnny Knoxville and the gang, but it certainly doesn't match the intensity or hilarity of the feature films. There are no trips to doctors to get x-rays of a rectally inserted toy car or department store display toilet defecations, but there is Dave England's "vomelet," wherein he eats the ingredients for an omelette, barfs them into a frying pan and feeds it to Steve-O. This one made me dry heave. There is also considerably more poo in this collection than others, as Steve-O poops while standing on stilts, someone else lays cable into a golf course hole and Dave England smears his faeces on a toilet seat. Fans of puke will get their fill as well during a milk chugging competition, which results in about five minutes of gratuitous heaving, along with a particularly explicit outburst from Steve-O after he falls from a unicycle into raw sewage. Unpredictable moments involving Chris Pontius dressed as a devil involve a passer-by physically assaulting him for carrying a sign that says: "Keep God out of California." A sequence where Johnny Knoxville dresses like Santa Claus and hands out fried chicken to slum residents also generates some unexpected reactions. Those repulsed by these descriptions should avoid checking out this DVD, while those familiar with the Jackass shtick should be amused. Bonus features include all of the "Hi, I'm Johnny Knoxville" openings from the television series, along with end credit montages and some footage from jackassworld.com.
