In the decades since the highly successful original Highlander fantasy film was released, the ensuing multi-property franchise proved — contrary to its own mantra — that there can't be only one. Now, it appears the story is set to be rebooted for yet another film, with The Witcher himself, Henry Cavill, attached to star.

The newest Highlander outing will take the form of another film, following its most recent iteration as 2007's Highlander: The Source from director Brett Leonard. As Deadline reports, Cavill has his eyes on the new film's lead role. Whether that character will be an established figure from the Highlander lore or someone new remains under wraps — much like most of the film's details.

We do know that John Wick director Chad Stahelski is already on board to helm the latest remake for Lionsgate, with Neal H. Moritz, Josh Davis and David Leitch serving as producers. Previously, Peter Davis — who helped produce the original 1986 film — was also attached to the project. Sadly, Davis passed away earlier this year before he could participate.

Without much else to go on, it's hard to imagine exactly how the Cavill-led film will take shape. In recent months, everyone from Ryan Reynolds and Justin Lin were also rumoured to be involved with the project, but so far nothing concrete has been announced. In the meantime, patient Highlander fans will just have to wait a little bit longer before we know more.
