Disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for sex crimes he committed in Los Angeles, The New York Times reports. The sentence delivered today is in addition to the 23 years he is currently serving after being convicted in New York in 2020.
Weinstein was found guilty on three counts in December: forcible rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual penetration by a foreign object. All counts are related to one victim — referred to as Jane Doe 1 in court — who claims she was assaulted by Weinstein in her hotel room while attending the Los Angeles Italia Film Festival.
Weinstein was not convicted of four other allegations by the Los Angeles court. He was acquitted of one count of sexual battery against a massage therapist, and the jurors couldn't deliberate on three other counts.
Considering Weinstien's sentencing in New York, this Los Angeles case was initially seen as symbolic. This changed after he was granted an appeal in the New York charges in August, making the outcome of this case more consequential to his fate.
On top of the sentence he has accumulated, the 70-year-old Weinstein is still facing charges in the UK for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in 1996.
Weinstein's lawyers are already requesting a new trial in Los Angeles, claiming the jury wasn't instructed correctly, and that specific evidence pertaining to Jane Doe 1 couldn't be presented.
