The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to be a polarizing topic in cinema in the years since Martin Scorsese first slammed the franchise in 2019. Florence Pugh is the latest to weigh in on the merits of superhero movies, while revealing that she came under fire from the indie community for joining the MCU.

Pugh, who gained recognition for her roles in such films as Midsommar, Lady Macbeth and Little Women, entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Yelena Belova in Black Widow and upcoming tentpole film Thunderbolts, and she says people in the indie community weren't altogether pleased with her decision to join the franchise.

"So many people in the indie film world were really pissed off at me," Pugh said in an interview with Time Magazine. "They were like, 'Great, now she's gone forever.' And I'm like, no, I'm working as hard as I used to work. I've always done back-to-back movies. It's just people are watching them now."

The 27-year-old actor defended her choice to take on the Marvel role, saying in an interview with Total Film, "There's beauty in the massive, epic storylines … They're amazing, mega movies. And then there's also beauty in all these little ones that not everyone is going to see, but are going to affect the right person at the right time. I've never, ever only thought that I was going to just do one type of movie."

With her pro-Marvel statement, Pugh joins the likes of Simu LiuBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever star Danai GuriraNicolas CageElizabeth OlsenRobert Downey Jr. and James Gunn in speaking out in defence of the franchise's iron grip on film.

They stand in opposition to MCU detractors Quentin TarantinoDenis Villeneuve (who will direct Pugh in the second instalment of Dune), Francis Ford CoppolaBong Joon-ho (kind of), Benedict Cumberbatch and Leonardo DiCaprio (as well as protégé Timothee Chalamet).

Between shooting the Marvel films, Pugh continues to star in smaller films such as Sebastian Lelio's The Wonder and Zach Braff's A Good Person.
