After Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage had some choice words about Disney's forthcoming live-action Snow White remake, the company has attempted to set the record straight regarding their intentions for the project.
The Emmy-winning actor was a guest on comedian Marc Maron's WTF podcast this past Monday (January 24) and shared some WTF-aligned sentiments about the new live-action remake of the classic 1937 animated fairytale.
In response to the casting news of West Side Story breakout star Rachel Zegler as the titular princess, Dinklage said: "Literally no offence to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White — but you're still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you're doing there."
He continued: "It makes no sense to me. You're progressive in one way, but then you're still making that fucking backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together? What the fuck are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I'm not loud enough."
Yesterday (January 25), the entertainment conglomerate issued a statement defending its new adaptation of the story.
"To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community," a spokesperson for Disney told The Hollywood Reporter. "We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period."
The new Snow White has been in the works for the past three years. Although it's still another few years away from being released, it will reportedly have cultural consultants like other recent live-action Disney remakes for Mulan and Aladdin.
Dinklage is not involved in the project, which will see Zegler joined by "Imagine" singalong leader Gal Gadot and Tony winner Andrew Burnap.
Dinklage recently performed a song from his upcoming film Cyrano with Aaron and Bryce Dessner on Stephen Colbert's Late Show. The actor also appeared in the 2021 film I Care a Lot.
