Get ready to travel back in time to 1957 tonight — 20th Century Studios has released the official trailer for Oscar-winner Steven Spielberg's film adaptation of the beloved musical West Side Story.
Starring Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver, The Goldfinch) alongside a cast of relative newcomers including Rachel Zelger as María, the original Broadway show (with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins) is reimagined through Spielberg's directorial lens and Tony Kushner's screenplay. The cast also features Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Josh Andrés Rivera, Ana Isabelle, Corey Stoll, Brian d'Arcy James and Rita Moreno.
Set to the classic "Tonight" from the iconic score, the trailer sets our scene in '50s New York City. As Romeo and Juliet did before them, star-crossed teenagers María and Tony lock eyes on the dance floor (except this time the ball takes place at a more relatable gymnasium). Their young love connection immediately poses a threat to their respective communities, which remain at odds with each other.
Fighting, dancing, singing, yearning — it's all here.
Watch the trailer for West Side Story below ahead of its theatrical release on December 10.
Spielberg is also producing the next Indiana Jones movie starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge alongside Harrison Ford.
