Billy Corgan Says Smashing Pumpkins Were Asked to Do the 'Shrek' Soundtrack Before Smash Mouth
Published Aug 16, 2018When it comes to the history of cinema, few pairings are quite as iconic as that of Shrek and Smash Mouth. The misadventures of the lovable ogre pair perfectly with the mall ska stylings of San Jose's finest, so much so that it's almost impossible to imagine Mike Myers' half-assed Scottish accent without humming the tune to "All Star." But the film's music almost went in a much more alternative direction.
Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has been making good use of his Instagram, answering fan questions in his stories on an overwhelmingly regular basis. When the topic of Shrek came up, Corgan revealed that the film's producers nearly went with his own band.
Though they ultimately picked Smash over Smashing, Shrek's producers had initially asked the Pumpkins to contribute a song to the closing credits of the film. As Corgan explains, the choice would have been their final song pre-breakup, "Untitled."
Listen to "Untitled" below and imagine Shrek and co. frolicking along to its moody melodies. It would have shifted the entire tone of the whole movie.
