The hype for The Super Mario Bros. Movie is still going strong — and, as it turns out, one of the film's major stars taught the other one English well before they met.
Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Princess Peach, was born in Florida before moving to Argentina until she was six. After moving to the UK, the actor apparently learned English by watching movies like School of Rock — which coincidentally stars her Mario Bros. co-star Jack Black.
"At the school I went to when I first moved to London, they would play School of Rock every Friday," Taylor-Joy said [via Buzzfeed UK]. "At that time, I didn't really speak much English, if any, so that and Harry Potter and Jumanji are how I learned English."
While Bowser and Princess Peach's storylines directly involve each other — including a ballad sang by the former to the latter — the pair had never met in real life until a Super Mario Bros. Movie press event. Taylor-Joy admitted that meeting Black in person made her "starstruck."
"I didn't realize I was going to be doing the press day for this movie with Jack Black, so when I read that, the sound that came out of me was just this high pitch shriek that I was not expecting," Taylor-Joy said. "We haven't met each other because we all recorded our parts individually, so I was super starstruck when I saw the schedule for today."
She continued, "I very seldom get like that, but I was just running around earlier like, 'Oh my God, Tenacious D, this is amazing,'" adding that she does the comedy group's "Tribute" at karaoke: "I do all the voices. That's always awesome."
Lucky for Taylor-Joy, both School of Rock and The Pick of Destiny may be getting sequels soon.
