No one would accuse either of the recent Batman film adaptations — both the Christopher Nolan-directed The Dark Knight trilogy and Ben Affleck's Justice League incarnation — of being too lighthearted or lacking in brooding self-seriousness. Except, maybe, for Andy Serkis, one of the stars of the upcoming reboot The Batman, who recently alluded to the new film's intense, grittier tone.
In an interview with LadBible, Serkis — who will play Bruce Wayne's trusted butler, Alfred Pennyworth — was asked if fans could expect a "darker, broodier" Batman from the reboot. Serkis replied, "I would say that's not far from the truth. It's very much about the emotional connection between Alfred and Bruce. That's really at the centre of it. And it is a really exquisite script that [director and co-screenwriter] Matt [Reeves] has written."
As previously reported, the film will star Robert Pattinson in the title role, in addition to Jeffrey Wright, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, John Turturro, Jayme Lawson and Peter Sarsgaard.
It is set for release on October 1, 2021, after its initial June 25, 2021 release date was pushed back due to COVID-19. Production on the film remains halted.
