Ryan Reynolds counts himself among the many Canadians who love the homegrown comedy talents of the late John Candy, so much so that he'll explore the comedian's life and work in a forthcoming documentary.
Reynolds shared news of the project Monday (October 10) on Twitter, where Candy was a trending topic, pointing to the involvement of his Maximum Effort production company and Colin Hanks. The actor added of the project, "Expect tears."
Adding to the excitement, People cites a rep for Reynolds confirming that Maximum Effort will have "access to [Candy's] archive and home video footage." It remains unclear what Hanks's role in the project will be.
Further confirmation of the film's existence came from Candy's two children. Son Christopher Candy said of Reynolds' tweet, "This is all true," while daughter Jennifer Candy added in a respective tweet, "Boom! So looking forward to working on this with them and our family. This project is in great hands."
Candy was born October 31, 1950, in Newmarket, ON. He later died of a heart attack on March 4, 1994, at the age of 43.
Candy memorably appeared in comedy classics including Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Cool Runnings, Home Alone, The Great Outdoors, Spaceballs and Uncle Buck.
In 2020, Toronto declared October 31 to be "John Candy Day," on what would have marked his 70th birthday.
