Chi Pig, founder of the legendary Canadian punk band SNFU, has passed away. Though his cause of death is unknown, he died Thursday (July 16) at the age of 57.
Born Kendall Chinn, he formed his first punk band Live Sex Shows in Edmonton in 1981. That group evolved into Society's No Fucking Use, a band that eventually shortened their name to SNFU.
In 1990, Chi relocated to Vancouver and formed a second incarnation of SNFU. In this era, they signed with Epitaph and reached the height of their mass popularity. That incarnation disbanded in 2005, but another version of SNFU existed in Vancouver from 2007 to 2018.
Chi's life was documented in the biographical film Open Your Mouth and Say... Mr. Chi Pig, which was released in 2010.
News of Chi Pig's death was confirmed by longtime SNFU bassist Dave Bacon. In a Facebook post, he shared the following message on behalf of Chi's family:
It breaks my heart to say this, but our beloved friend has left this mortal coil just a short while ago. He is now at peace. May he live on in our hearts and memories forever.
