Zunior Gone Wild

LABEL

An innovative new record label has provided fans with the closest thing to an Inbreds reunion anyone's seen since Dave Ullrich and Mike O'Neill retired their beloved band in 1998. Though they haven't committed to writing any new music together ("I would love to do a live show with Dave and play our favourite Inbreds songs," O'Neill admits), the dynamic duo are on the same team when it comes to Zunior.com, a new online label launched by Ullrich.

Zunior's philosophy is pretty straight-forward: to provide artists with a completely equitable and hassle-free way to get their music to an audience at an affordable price that is in no way affected by traditional music industry meddling and price gouging. According to Ullrich, the Zunior concept came from the idea of creating a truly "pure" method of music distribution. "Let's face it — Dischord is probably the coolest label that there has ever been," he says, "but digital takes the possibilities to the next level. An artist can record an entire record at home with full studio quality and distribute it to their fans on the very day the music is mastered. For the motivated independent musician, this can't be beat."

O'Neill certainly shares his former band-mate's enthusiasm, opting to release his long-awaited (and home-recorded), second solo album, The Owl, exclusively on Zunior. "As a producer, my dress code became ‘bathrobe' and suddenly there were no time limits; for two years, I was ‘in the middle' of making a record," he says. "I love [solo debut] What Happens Now? but for The Owl, I had exclusive control over every detail and it reflects my ideas about production and arrangement, as well as songwriting. I think the result is a denser, more complex record, one that takes more time to reveal itself." If The Owl's brilliance is any indication, music fans will have time to download amazing music from Zunior.com for years to come.
