Yesterday's Ring

Back from El Rancho

BY Sam SutherlandPublished Aug 1, 2006

The country punk side project of members of the Sainte Catherines and Rollerstarter, Yesterday’s Ring offer up whiskey-drenched country music for kids who listen to Tragedy. The band don’t hide their admiration of Cash, Hank and old Waits, but these four songs are equally steeped in the obvious punk background of the band’s five official members. Vocalist Hugo Mudie has the kind of gruff, torn-up vocals that make you want to believe every word he says, while the simple, honest music that backs his tales of hard love on the road is nothing short of wonderful; especially the choir that shows up on "Xmas in Greece.” A re-release of a limited run twelve-inch the band put out last year, Back from El Rancho is great-sounding music for late nights, porches and long drives.
